Simon Curtis, FCIA

Simon Curtis is a distinguished actuarial leader with more than 40 years of global experience in both corporate and professional roles. A former President of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries (2012-13), he has held numerous leadership positions in Canada and internationally, contributing to the advancement of actuarial standards and governance.
He recently served on the Actuarial Standards Board of Canada and as Chair of the CIA’s Tribunal Panel. Since 2024, he has been a member of the Executive Committee of the International Actuarial Association and is Vice-Chair of its Actuarial Standards Committee. He also represents the global actuarial profession on the IFRS Foundation Advisory Council, advising the IFRS Foundation Trustees, the International Accounting Standards Board and the International Sustainability Standards Board. He received the CIA’s Lifetime Legacy Award in recognition of his longstanding service and impact.
In industry, Simon has held senior executive roles in both the life insurance and reinsurance sectors. He spent nearly 30 years with Manulife Financial, including as Executive Vice President and Global Chief Actuary, where he served as Appointed Actuary for global operations and later as Executive Vice President, Business Development. He subsequently spent 10 years with Munich Re, including seven years based in Munich as Head of Central Life Reserving, with responsibility for global life and health reinsurance liabilities under major regulatory and valuation frameworks, including IFRS, Solvency II and market‑consistent embedded value.
